During 2014, we are celebrating 30 years of bringing customers from the UK to the Channel Islands. As part of this celebration, we will be writing about 30 Jersey essentials, from attractions and outdoor activities to special local food and some lesser-known island treats.

Part 13: Cream Teas

Jersey Cream teas are as recommendable as most of Jersey’s culinary experiences and are very high on the list of must-dos when visiting! Many hotels offer their own selection of home-made scones, local cream, jam, beautiful pastries, finger sandwiches and totally irresistible cakes. The visual treat plays a huge part in the pleasure of a cream tea experience and will often be combined with a fabulous location served on a terrace, by a lovely garden, or maybe facing the sea.

Luxury

Every single one of Jersey’s four and five star hotels offer their personalised version of an Afternoon Tea, some stretching the concept to include a glass of champagne on the menu, and why not! After all the idea is to spend some time relaxing with your fellow travellers, be they family or friends, and indulging together in the luxury of pleasant surroundings whilst tasting delicious sweet treats.

Jersey lends itself to this concept with its gentle pace of life and so many panoramas to admire from a well positioned tea room. Either side of your tea break you could take a walk on the nearest beach, do a little shopping, or maybe just  plan your next day visiting.

Simplicity

It is not just about menus, plush cushions and planned time-off though. There are lots of (beach) cafés peppered around the island, ready to deliver a traditional, simple and very satisfactory afternoon cream tea. No need to book, just go in when you feel like sitting down and resting from your day exploring. In season, local strawberries will probably also be served with one or another version of our famous Jersey Dairy cream.
