Locally known as St. Ouen's Pond, the site hosting the Jersey Wetland Centre is officially called La Mare au Seigneur - a name going back to 1309 when the local Seigneur kept its carps in the pond and used the surrounding land as a hunting ground. The area, the largest natural open water space in Jersey is now protected as a Site of Special Interest (SSI).
The Wetland Centre is a place of observation, education and conservation with its entrance discreetly located on the side of a sandy mound. Follow the tunnel leading to the wonderful exhibits describing the local wildlife, flora and fauna, before reaching the observation room and its viewing windows. Opening onto the wetland itself this allows for some wonderful bird watching.
Live camera footage of the surrounding life can be seen on a large screen, bird identification panels (painted by local artist Anna Le Moine Gray ) and interactive multimedia touchscreens will give everyone a unique discovery experience of the mostly secret lives of many birds, insects and other local species.
