St. Matthew's Glass Church

Lalique and Lady Trent

Very much a working church, St. Matthew's Glass Church is small and quite unassuming from the outside. The beauty lies within as the church is decorated or more precisely furnished with moulded white glass elaborated in the 1930's by René Lalique. The building dates back from 1840 when it was just a chapel of ease. However Lady Trent, married to Jesse Boot, founder of Boots The Chemist lived close to the church and holidayed in France where she met Lalique. She commissioned the artist with some artwork to complete her refurbishment project of the church.

The results are well worth a visit not only because the glass font, altar rail, cross and pillars are stunning but also because they are so original and unique. The moulds used were destroyed as the panels were completed.

St. Matthew's church is easily accessible by bus and is located on the edge of the lovely Coronation Park. There is a car park on site. There are occasions that the church may be closed to the public e.g. services, events, weddings and there will be a notice placed outside the church.
