Jersey Bite of the Week: Castle Green Gastropub

Castle Green Gastropub, Jersey

The Castle Green Gastropub is situated in prime foodie real estate, perched above one of Jersey’s most attractive bays and overlooking the grandeur of Mont Orgueil Castle on the east coast. On clear days, visitors are treated to a view of France; perfect for an alfresco meal or for toasting our continental neighbours with a glass of something red, white, pink, or bubbly.

The Castle Green makes use of its fabulous location by offering lunches six days per week, giving diners the opportunity to sit on the restaurant terrace during a sunny Sunday lunch or inside by the fire on a brisk winter afternoon. Mont Orgueil Castle provides a stunning backdrop to a meal at any time of the day, and is illuminated by spotlights during the evening.

The menu at the Castle Green carries Jersey’s traditions of freshly prepared local produce, with a big focus on fish and seafood from our waters. Social eaters will love the selection of small platters such as crab hummus, stuffed peppadews, smoked almonds, and Jersey Royal Bay oysters, keenly priced at £3.50 each: an ideal beginning to a memorable meal.

The starter selection caters for many tastebuds, with influences from the Channel Islands to Japan, via France and the Alps. The less or more collection of dishes creates a diverse menu, including large or small portions of Alpine ploughman’s with cured ham, local fish platter, and spicy tempura ribs with king prawns.

Main courses are varied and range from simple classics to international flavour combinations. Carnivores are looked after well at the Castle Green; a simple dish of Jersey black angus steak & ale pie will satisfy the hungriest of eaters, whilst the roast breast of guinea fowl offers a smaller, more discerning dish. If all you need is a burger or some fish and chips, then no problem: portions are substantial and extremely tasty. Vegetarians can enjoy taste sensations from far-flung influences, including tempura marinated haloumi cheese and portobello mushrooms with a melting cheddar rarebit.

Cheese lovers will be in heaven at the Castle Green, with the small but well-formed dessert menu offering a selection of Jersey, French and English cheeses, served with a delectable accompaniment of fig & almod cake with biscuits and quince paste. If your sweet tooth is nagging you, there are rich, fresh, simple and complex choices, including a traditional pear & apple crumble, a towering chocolate brownie, and a tangy lime parfait with nutella sorbet.
